Hello Linda,

To change the default font, open TextEdit and open the preferences (Cmd-Comma). 
Select the Rich Text radio button. Navigate right to Rich text font and click 
the Change button to the right.

The Fonts palette will open and you can use VO-Cmd-t to get to the first table 
where you select the collection (I normally leave this on All). Then go right 
to select your font and right again to set the size. Hide the Fonts palette 
with Cmd-t and close the preferences with Cmd-w. Your default font should be 
changed.
