Hello Andy, There is no option to turn off the preview pane. You have to navigate to the horizontal splitter under the message headers in classic view, or to the vertical splitter between the message headers and the message body in the modern view, then bring the mouse (VO-Cmd-F5) and double click with mouse or trackpad.
If you press VO-j on a message, does it read it? If so, you still have the preview pane showing. If you're in classic view, does pressing VO-Down arrow take you to the body of the message?
