That was going to be my suggestion, accept for the "MyWay Lite." This way you could see if the app would work for you. This version is free. It works exactly like the paid version, so I won't repeat what has been said. Once a route has been saved, you can go and open it up and the route can be reversed to back out of your walk in the woods. This app was most helpful when camping in Yosemite this past summer in finding locations starting from the tent. Take a look. My one tip as others gave to me before using it on an actual route was to practice with it to familarize yourself on how it works. I know to get good compass directions, the phone needs to be in portrait on a horizontal plane. HTH.
