David, like you, I used to use column browser mode almost exclusively unless I 
needed to see the date or size of a file.
Then I found that list view is just as flexible as column view. you can use the 
arrow keys by themselves to open and close folders. you don't need to use the 
command O or command down arrow keystrokes to open a folder unless you want to 
make it the "current" folder for pasting etc.
So, its really just as flexible as column view, with the added benefit of 
having access to the file meta data  that isn't there in column view.

VO left and right arrows will move across the meta data, while left and right 
arrows alone will open and close a subfolder. Check it out, you might grow to 
like it.
