Hi! I'm late in on this discussion and I know nothing whatever about crosswords so not sure whether this information would be of help or practical.
I used to use a piece of software called Marsedit to edit my Blog back in the days when I maintained one. The same developers of Marsedit had a whole bunch of stuff relating to crosswords, everything from crossword creating and compiling tools to crosswords themselves so perhaps that may be worth following up.
