Hi there.

Yes vmware works just fine with windows 8.1.  I am not sure if you can get 
windows 8.1  working without installing w8 first I am still trying to figure 
that out myself.  I  know you can get a download for $119.  If you want pro 
ofcorse it is going to caust motre but it should work just fine.
