I do not understand the first part of your question. In relation to your second question these files are called alias because they are not the actual folder but a shortcut file pointing to the actual folder. So you can , for example, safely delete the alias to your dropbox folder without any impact on the actual dropbox folder.
In short they perform the same function as shortcut on Windows.
