Would a novis like me benefit from this Superduper app? Is it perhaps too
early for me to be worrying about it?

I’ve encountered this problem as well, and the solution is to use the tab
and spacebar keys, and don’t, repeat, do not use the vo arrow keys to
navigate in the scheduler. At least in the boxes where you check off what
days to schedule, using the vo keys to navigate cause the boxes to
automatically check when you land on them. So, use the tab key and when you
come to a day you want to check, press spacebar on it. Strange I know, but
that’s the deal.
