They do. they get a little item they can add to their own ios calendar. This will not work when sending a non ios person an invite, they get nothing. I have had the opportunity to test this twice, once with my bf who uses ios and once with my dad who does not. Bf got the invite and added it to his calendar, dad did not and so could not add the appointment to theirs.
The notification will also if they are on ios show up as an alert in the notifications center. Have not tested the alert in osx. Tc.
