In order for it to have an audio in port, Apple would probably have to
write a routine in OS-X for the OS to recognize it.
Apple apparently has eliminated the audio in ports on the pro computers
because they feel that a dedicated sound card or USB can do a better job
than the mike jack ever did. Apparently their strategy is sound: quite a
few vendors have come out with USB-to-Audio adapters that work well, Griffin
being one of cheapest with their iMic, and EMagic 's new device is getting
some raves. Apple's also now selling M-Audio's sound cards on their web
site.
I'm excited about the stuff I'm hearing about OS-X has been fine tuned
to work with both audio recording and MIDI management right out of the box -
no more jiggery-pokery with using a third-party driver like OMS or FreeMIDI.
Now let's hope Apple has cleared this with the Beatles BEFORE they added
those features :)
