Depending on how much you're willing to spend (and where you live...
I'm guessing rural given the one-mile radius network ;-), you could
pick up yourself a used G4 for <$400 at ehMac.ca.

Also, other wireless access point manufacturers will make access
points that can accept external antennas (I think Airport Extreme base
stations can take an external antenna).
