I've been unable to dig up any Open Transport updates for Mac OS 8.6, except for the few G4 Macs and certain iMac or iBook that can run 8.6. That is OT 2.6.
Is there an OT update for 8.6 that will install on a Beige G3? I finally (hopefully) found a cure for the insanely long timeouts when an ASIP server is unavailable. It's called AppleShare Client Setup 1.0 and the only place I've found it (after much searching) is buried deep in the Misc directory on Apple's FTP. Any link on Apple's site to that or several other updates for pre-OS 9.x.x just bounces you to the top of their downloads section. Bleah. I haven't tried rebooting yet to see if it worked to uncheck the automount at boot box in ASCS and slashing the TCP Connect Timeout from 240 to 120 seconds. That's the main problem, if an ASIP server isn't available, you can't get to the window to uncheck the shares to automount. That gets really nasty when an ASIP server is gone for good! I like how Win9x handles this, you _don't_ have to login to a server to select or unselect shares to have them automount. Shares can be mapped even if the server they're on isn't available. You can even "pre-map" shares before you even have access if you know the network path to them. :) Win9x even has an option to map shares at boot _without_ trying to access them until you want to open them later. AND if a server isn't available, it will time out in a decently short length of time. PLUS you can continue to do _other stuff_ while Win9x is logging into those servers/shares. Unlike Mac OS which ties up the whole system while you sit there and wait, and wait, and wait. So, is OS 9.x.x any different about how it handles this networkstuff or is it more of the same, without any "built in" way to fix the default settings to ones that work better? ===== "The earth swarms with inhabitants.
