Ohyeah, if you copy system.1st over system.dat
you'll have to reinstall all the software you've
installed since installing Windows. Fun, eh?

If you really run up against it, with Win95 you can
get a fresh start by deleting system.1st, system.dat,
user.dat and win.com (do that from DOS mode!) then
SYS the C: drive, reboot and reinstall Win95. It
won't keep anything from the old setup but you'll
get several prompts asking if you want to overwrite
newer files with older ones. Click Yes if the thing
was really FUBAR.

Win98 is a bit different. It tries to keep all your
software working when you reinstall it over itself.
It will just attempt to repeat your options from
the initial install, won't even ask for the CD Key.
Should that fail, you can try all the switches for
SETUP (from DOS mode) to wipe out, blow away and
overwrite as much as possible.

If that still won't fix it then you're basically
screwed and get to learn the use of DELTREE to
wipe c:\windows (and also delete system.1st) then
start over. There's just too many places for a
problem to hide in 98 that you cannot force the
install to override with original files or registry
info.
