I dunno about cluttering up the list. Surely the design of the latest Mac is very on topic? If any wants us to cease discussing it then please just let me know and I'll stop : ) I've been enjoying it up to now. Problems with previous cases? Even fans of Mac case design have to admit that there are not, the easiest to add drives and other components. The G3 towers onward are a lot better but up to that point they had problems. Ever add ram to a 8/9500 or an early imac? Replace the drives in either? How about replacing the PSU in a G4? etc. This is one area that the G5 looks a lot better. But then PC have been so easy to upgrade from day one. So I think its a matter of Mac's catching up the rest of the PC world rather than the other way round. Sorry but more fans = more noise. Having 9 fans at 20dba does not give you a sound level of 20dba. The sound of every fan is added to the next one. I can't remember the forumlae but its probably going to be close on 30dba or higher. The Cube and iMacs got away with out lots of fans so personally I think their moving in the wrong direction with this.
I'd love to see the G5 in the flesh but its unlikely since theres very few Mac dealers where I live and the biggest one closed down recently. I actually like the G5 case but I don't think its ground breaking which is what I'd expect from Apple. Personally I didn't like the B&W case due to the colour. Once they changed it with the G4's it looked a lot better IMO. I 've always like the look of Apple cases overall but I 'm aware of their short comings too! Sure from a style and consumer design point of view they deserve their awards. But if you were a IT person servicing them you might not have been so complementary about them. The G5 looks like its designed with IT tech/professional in mind. Instead of the designer office crowd. To be honest the G5 looks like a server box to me. Finally why is my system time wrong? I'm using a cheapo P4 1.8a overclocked to 2.7ghz and occasionally when I've been mucking about with it the system time resets itself. In terms of cooling I'm using one quiet fan (Paspt 19dba) over the CPU, one quiet fan over the HD (not really needed though) and one quiet fan in the PSU. Not silent but quiet. So you can see why the 9 fans in the G5 makes me shudder! I also have a Mac and a AMD machine. I'm not platform-centric anyways. Dell are not great bang for buck wise. But where I live they are a heck of lot cheaper than Macs. Which is why you see hundreds of them in every large institution around. Whereas seeing a Mac in a business is very rare.
