Does anyone know of a way to short-circuit the annoying "Are you sure
you want to shut down your computer now?" message that OSX throws up?

FruitMenu can be configured to do this in one click.. and it also works for Restart,
Sleep, etc. (Reminds me of the way you can go into Finder/Preferences and deselect
"Show warning before emptying the Trash")
...if you haven't tried this shareware yet, I highly recommend it.

but honestly, when I want to shutdown I usually just hit Control & Eject,
then tap the Return key (Enter) - fast & simple.
