There has been some discussion about this elsewhere (pages of MacWorld, perhaps?) Basically, they've chosen to charge VAT for all EU .Mac subscribers at the highest rate in the EU; presumably to be on the safe side.

Presumably also illegal.

Well, I don't know.

However, I tracked down the reference I quoted above. It's in the October (ie, last month's) issue of MacWorld at the end of an article entitled '.Mac renewal bribes', and it finishes:- 'Apple sources confirm the 21% VAT charge is to bring the company into line with EU rules. Critics question why Apple has chosen to levy the highest VAT charge available in Europe, particularly against UK customers, who pay in sterling, rather than euros.'
