Re your request for help, I see that there has been some listings regarding the port not having enough power to supply the scanner.
There is a USB 2 card bus by Belkin out which although only listed for use on Windows PC's has been used by a lister on a Wallstreet with success. The one advantage with this card is it has two ports on it and between them is a socket which you are able to plug in a power adaptor which is supplied in the package. This may then supply the required power for the scanner.
This was the last posting on the list regarding its success in a Wallstreet below:

Hi
Just a quick note to say that I have just bought a Belkin USB 2.0 Cardbus adapter, for which the box has no mention of Mac OS compatibility (and neither has the Belkin site, for that matter).
It worked right out of the box on my 15" TiBook, running 10.2.6.
(If anyone is wondering why would I want/need usb 2, let me add that it is meant to be used with my wife's wallstreet, which, of course, lacked usb of any sort; so I might as well skip 1.1 and get a usb 2 card for very little more)

Hi Luis,
I looked at this model to use on my Wallstreet as it looked very neat and compact but as it had no listing for Mac OS I opted for the USB 1.1 Belkin model. I would like to know if it is indeed running as a USB 2 as I thought that the Mac OS did not cover USB 2. Could it be that it is just running as a USB 1.1.
If you get around to trying it in the Wallstreet just let us know if it indeed runs OK, I just might consider buying one.

I tried it in the Wallstreet and it worked beautifully, but I have no way to check whether it really can work as USB 2 proper (I don't have any USB 2 peripherals). Anyway, as USB 2 support is expected to improve at OS level, it seems likely to work soon if it is not already (better USB 2 support was one of the things mentioned in the now pulled 10.2.8 update).
There was one particularly nice touch in this card: it comes with an external power supply (and a connector for it between the two usb ports), so it can provide power to bus-powered devices, if needed. I was able to scan without plugging the power supply, and was able to download pictures from my digital camera with the power provided by the card's power supply.

Last night I had a call from my daughter. (She and her Mac are 150 miles away so I can=B9t =8Ctinker=B9 with it).
She had bought on Saturday a USB scanner from John Lewis to connect to her Powerbook 233MHz G3 with two pc card slots.
Her Mac has a USB card and a Firewire card installed in the slots. The scanner is a Canon Lide 20 Scanner and takes its power from the USB port.
Needless to say she can=B9t get the scanner to mount.
So I can help her I would be interested to know if you:
Q1 can you run such a scanner from a Powerbook 233MHz G3 using a USB pc slot card?
Q2 could share with me any problems you=B9ve experienced in trying to use a USB scanner from a USB card on a G3 in this way.
Grateful for any help advice or guidance you may wish to share.
Regards Bob B:-)
