we don't actually know. I didn't know you could use finder! :O
I haven't even tried ftp except using fetch which I downloaded from .mac
and I'm not even 100% with what's going on with that. Like why can't I ftp an entire folder with it,
and not individual files?
Also, want a better ftp way to go!

I think the Windows telnet client does not support passive mode, so that would be where I would look for the problem. I am somewhat confused though as everything you describe is the opposite of what I would expect given your description, but it does look like Windows is making an active FTP connection while the Mac is making a passive one.
Here is what I would try, in the Network panel of System Preferences go
to the Proxies tab and change the setting of the "Use Passive FTP Mode
(PASV)" checkbox to see if that makes any difference (this is correct
for Jaguar, I don't know if it has changed in Panther). I don't know
whether this will affect the terminal client or not but it may be worth
trying. Also what happens if you connect to the server in Finder?
The following page will explain the difference between active and passive FTP which might help you understand what is happening, though it does go into a lot more detail than you would probably need: http://slacksite.com/other/ftp.html
Thanks Michael,
Yes, I can remember learning about active and passive FTP before when the
company I used to work for first started building a web site :-) Thanks
for the link.
Tried the Network FTP passive option, but it doesn't seem to affect the Terminal.
But...I'd completely forgotten about using the Finder for FTP (probably because it was so bad when I tried it in earlier versions of OSX). It works a treat, though I only used it to browse through the web site directories.
Before I break something, could somebody confirm or deny whether Finder's
FTP is still read-only like it used to be pre-10.3?
