So I would recommend the likes of
www.pastemusic.com - where I've discovered the excellent Jan Krist, and Over The Rhine
www.pitchforkmedia.com/mp3/ - good for indie/alternative rock stuff
www.garageband.com - a real mix of genres, from blues to electronica
www.betterpropoganda.com - from rock to hip hop
Plus of course there are big name bands/artists offering free mp3s if you look in the right places - eg went to www.amazon.com yesterday and picked up two Joss Stone tracks, Last Nite by The Strokes, two songs by Alison Krauss, the new Beth Gibbons (ex Portishead singer) single and a song by Earl Slick with Robert Smith of The Cure. Not bad!!
Anyone else got any free, legal, sources to pass on?
