No idea about your specific problem, but I do know the interarchy people ( http://www.interarchy.com/) put a lot of work into dealing with obscure errors and being interoperable with a very wide range of ftp servers.

incidentally i have stopped using terminal and use a teminal-esque app called iTerm, you can do tabbed windows like you do with safari.

I use fugu for everything else - ssh/ftp/sftp etc. http://rsug.itd.umich.edu/software/fugu/
