It is not quite as bleak as that, though it is still much dearer than BB by wire. It might be worth talking to BT about "deals". We had our installation part funded by Scottish Enterprise and I gather there is leg up funding widely available. The kit can be hired but it is no likely to be cost effective. We pay �59.95 + VAT /m for our two way connection but I think you will find Willow's deal is a good bit cheaper.

Have you tried satellite?
B.T. and maybe thirty other companies can provide it for you.
Last time I looked into it two-way satellite cost GBP900 up front for the equipment, and GBP90 a month for the connection.
I can't justify more than GBP50 a month for broadband, and can't find any interest in connection sharing among my few neighbours (farms with their accounts on 486s running DOS-based programs).
BTW if I still lived in Wales the government would subsidise the satellite cost to match ADSL price - oh well, I'm not bitter, honest ;^)
A company called Willow based in Haywards Heath seem to offer a relatively good deal.
Couldn't see anything on their website about this.
