The upside is that the English language is spoken in some form and
level of ability by two billion people worldwide. That is mostly due
to the British Empire, the fact that the language has taken root in so
many places and particularly in one former colony that has in effect
established its own empire. The logical consequence is that as the
language now has its majority population based in a land beyond the
its indigenous home, there will be changes and adaptations. Get used
to it and be thankful there are so many people on Earth that speak
English!
So the British have a soft spot for their heritage in language,
currency, measurements and Royal family.
Kinda silly as the modern English language is a bastard child of
German
and French with a bit of proper native thrown in, Celtic!
Also, as Susan already pointed out, the present British English is a
whole different kettle of fish compared to yesterdays English. It is
one
of the fastest CHANGING languages in the world that borrows words from
all over the world.
Agreed.
Just some info I had hanging in my head from a study I did into the
origin of Dutch as it started roughly around the same time as English.
Both starting from west Germanic language.
Friesland apparently is the origin of Olde English. Seems it shows up
today in the local dialect.
