I believe you can start one in Target mode using a firewire cable and
install that way, though I have never tried it myself.

Dunno - but you could make a data disk image on Powerbook and move
that onto
the iMac (if you had room for that and the installation). There are
nearly
always ways round but if it got too awkward the 15 quid wouldn't
actually
seem so much!
