Hi, I am looking for some advice on the subtleties of syncronising a lap top and a desk top so I can keep virtually a portable version of the main points of interest on the desktop computer.

I've just started using ChronoSync to backup my PB to my Cube, over an Airport network. Seems to work OK, although the first sync was a bit slow.

I have inherited an iBook which I think will be quite useful when 'in the field' but I will also plumb it in to the network, so am concerned about confusing one computer with the other; I have a .Mac account Apple ID which is necessarily common to both machines but the machine names are different. Thus the account names are the same but so are the passwords for the accounts. I think that the computers having the same owner with the same password might be cause for some problems but not sure if I am worrying unnecessarily. Any tips most welcome.

You might be confused but the computers won't be. They use the Ethernet/MAC address.

Also views on licensing of software, given I can only use it on one machine or the other, not simultaneously.

Up to you, really. I've installed everything on both my machines. Some applications will object if you run both copies at the same time (assuming they can tell) but most won't.

Also the benefits of using a .Mac account for mail over a POP account.
