One thing that has always amused me in the past is that at least until 2002 there were definite speed differences between North American and Euro (yes that includes us lot at least in this context) scanner drivers... For some bizarre reason if the speeds were over a certain rate in the EU then there was a tax or higher rate tax or something that made the manufacturers produce a 'throttled' version of the normal drivers for scanners. One only had to know about this to then go get the US versions and watch the scanner suddenly speed up x fold...My snapscan touch from Agfa was like this...not sure if you are now hearing different noises because of this? (do you have a subjective feeling for the speeds from before and now?) Secondly there is another alternative that you could try to use (although it is commercial software) called Vuescan. They have a trial version and I have heard of it for several years now...never tried it myself though...
