I have a G4 DA 800MHz with 30GB startup drive and 80GB 2nd drive (internal)
10.4.2 640MB RAM

The 80GB drive started to show signs of directory damage -

Finder would quit and relaunch after trying to access certain files.
Trying to copy files from the 80GB drive gave the error message "the action
could not be completed because this file could not be read or written to"

DiscWarrior seems to be unable to replace the directory with a rebuilt one
and suggests backing up files from the preview (although it is locked)

I'm waiting for a large FW drive to recover about 50GB of important stuff
from the drive before I reformat.

Now the weird stuff - Every so often (after waking from sleep for example)
the Finder displays random custom icons on many of the files on both drives.
Logging in and out restores them to their original state.
I did an archive and re-install but the same thing happens.

Could a faulty secondary drive cause this or it it something else?

Andy
