If I recall, you had 10.1.5 on there? Did you take the so called 'easy
option' and 'upgrade' rather than doing a clean install?

In my experience, happiness is a clean install. Even better, backup
your data and any MacOS 9 apps you want to keep - erase and then
install.

Oh - there is no rebuilding the desktop in MacOS X - you can - however
- try launching the Disk Utility and fixing permissions.
