Not sure if this is off topic as such but I wonder if anyone can

Somehow, for reasons as yet unknown, half my daughter's expansive
music collection was deleted from her iTunes library, over 1500
songs in fact. She is distraught because she nows that as soon as
she plugs her iPod in to her iBook the iBook will wipe them off her
iPod as well. I am not at all au fait with iPod things but
apparently they are very annoying in that you can't change the
settings from automatic to manual without first plugging it in and,
if you do, it automatically syncs, so how you can prevent the
wiping of the iPod I don't know. Further, I have no idea how you
can sync it back the way so she can recover her songs to iTunes.
If anyone has any suggestions as to what she can do they may spare
this family multiple nervous breakdowns.
I'm not sure how you avoid the automatic updating. I imagine there
will be an initial delay after plugging in while the computer starts
iTunes then compares the two libraries so probably you can force quit
iTunes from its Dock icon before updating starts. You should then be
able to use one of the many iPod utilities to backup the contents of
the iPod onto the Mac (since iTunes doesn't allow you to move tracks
off the iPod). I'm not familiar with any of them but a search for
'ipod' at http://www.versiontracker.com will give you plenty of choice.
