The G5 is in my Den, not an opera house, so quality rather than quantity is the criterion! Just after other user's opinions before taking the plunge.

Myles,

I have spent a bit of time on a similar quest (on a budget) and have achieved quite good results with a direct cable connection to an amplifier [line in socket] which is otherwise and to all intents and purposes set up as a hi fi. I have a good secondary set up in the house using a Denon mini system which sounds lovely when we plumb the iBook into it. You can buy that system in John Lewis at a very reasonable price and you will see that it has won several What Hi Fi awards and deservedly so in my opinion. If you buy a good Monster mini jack to RCA (phono) lead in Comet that will be you set up up with a very good system. Assuming you have a mini jack out on the G5.

My own system here is driven by the G4 with said Monster cable (with a soft wire support to stop the weight of the cable putting a sideway load on the socket) running to a preamp connected to two bridged power amps and two monitor speakers set at just above eye level on the wall behind the screen about 1500mm apart. It is my opinion that the speakers are less important than having a good amplifier and i would suggest using a good vintage amp so you have excellent sound quality with something you can pick up for less than £500. Though there is of course the potential to spend much more :0) If you are interested I can suggest places to look but you may already have something to suit.

Having said that I think the choice of speaker is less important, it obviously is 'within reason' and needs to be able to do the things you demand of it. Some speakers work better in free space and some work OK near to a wall and you need to site them accordingly. If it is to play music while you are sat at your computer then a "studio monitor" arrangement will probably suit best. I can recommend Rogers LS3/5a s or JR149 s as sounding superb if driven by a good amp. I have a pair of 149s which I use in this system and I adore the sweet sounds they make at all volume levels. I also have some Celestion SL6s which you can pick up second hand at a good price but they need lots of space around them and even so, despite their deserved reputation, they come second to the 149s in my book.

If this all sounds far too expensive I can suggest you buy a pair of Videologic Sciroccos for about £150. They are active (powered) speakers about the same size as the LS3/5as and they sound really really good. they don't look much (black boxes) but they represent extremely good value for money. Comet did stock them but I think you can buy them direct. If you cannot find them, the company is part of the PURE company that make and market the DAB radios. There is a heap of mediocre junk out on the shelves and you could be forgiven for thinking these were more of the same - they aint though.

It almost goes without saying that you need to site the speakers so they do not interfere with the monitor or set up boomy resonances in desk furniture.
