If the firmware didn't solve the known firewire issues with certain versions of X and your drive then I would suggest waiting until after the login process is over before plugging in the firewire drive. Not pretty but will get over the kernel panic you are experiencing. There may be better workarounds around as this was a fairly common issue. Googling should bring up a day's worth of reading on it...(for what its worth I thought this was 'fixed' in 4.3 and after upgrading the firmware on the older firewire bridges...)
