I reset the video resolution on my G3 B&W tonight to a resolution that
either the monitor or video card can't manage.

The screen went black and the tell-tale light on the monitor went from
green to orange. I couldn't get the screen to display and after much
frantic pressing of keys, I hit the power button, got the beep so I
hit return to reboot.

On reboot the screen sparks up on the grey screen, flashes and then
displays the grey screen again. I don't see the Classic Mac icon - the
screen goes black and the monitor light turns orange again. The same
happens if I try to boot from a CD (holding down C on boot).

Are there any key combinations in Mac OS 9.2.2. to hold down during
the boot process to by-pass the 'default' settings and boot in the Mac
equivalent of Windoze safe mode so that I can reset the vidoe
settings?
