I had a weird thing happen in iPhoto 5 a couple of days ago, so I
thought I'd mention it in case it affects somebody else in the future...
I took some photos and imported them into iPhoto to filter out the usual
crap ones and perform some editing. One picture (2048 x 1536 pixels)
needed some cropping. When I hit the "Done" button to commit the edit I
had the spinning beachball for ages and eventually had to force quit the
application. Went back in, repeated the operation and everything worked
fine.
That evening .Mac Backup was copying everything from the mini to the
"backup server" and it seemed to be taking an eternity backing up what
appeared to be one of my newly imported JPEGs. I used Spotlight (Hurrah!
I've used it again) to track the file down...
2.3GB!
It would preview in the Finder with only a small pause so I guess iPhoto
either:
a) threw a wobbly and started padding the end of the file out;
b) threw a wobbly and did something nasty to the file system which makes
the file appear to be 2.3GB.
The file was not being used in iPhoto so I simply deleted it. The lesson
for today is therefore...if you have to force quit iPhoto during an
edit...check the corresponding folders for BIG files.
