Hi everybody,
I'm sure that no one on this list is ignorant of the fact that since
switching to the Intel processor and riding on the success of iPods and iTunes, Apple computers have grown tremendously in popularity over the last 12 months. Well, recently Microsoft accounced a new version of MS Officefor the Mac due to come out later this year, it will be a Universal Binary, and completely built for the Mac.

Are you sure it will be able to read the OpenDocument format?

Why does this matter to the OOo marketing list?

I would have thought it was rather a Mac porting topic, but there are possibilities for Marketing though.

Well, it would be very good if OpenOffice.org could release a Mac- native Universal Binary version before MS Office 2008.

No question - and the Mac porting team is working hard to release the native version as soon as possible.

It should be pointed out that a Universal Binary and Aqua are two separate things. We have done some work on Universal Binaries, however due to the assembly (machine specific) code in OpenOffice.org, there is a problem. It isn't quite a full Universal Binary.

Most of the developer efforts have been on porting ooo over to Aqua. As pointed out below.

So do you suppose us to start a campaign searching for
developers and funding for the mac port?

We have had a number of developers joining the Mac Port recently.
A list of current developers can be seen at
http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/developers/currentdevelopers/ index.html

We also hold regular IRC Port meetings, where developers and others who are interested in our work can come along. They are usually held weekly on a Friday at 21:00 hrs UTC.
See
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/MacOSXPortMeetings
for more information.

This would probably be a task for the Marketing project.
Imagine the marketing possiblities....
"Why wait for Microsoft to get around to us Mac users? Switch to the
latest Mac-native Universal Binary office suite today. - OpenOffice.org 2.2"

Even if you think it sucks, many people will use OOo2.2 with X11.
But a PR about a native version will only be possible, if there is such a version available.

I have come across many people who are not happy when they hear us talking about the Aqua version of OpenOffice.org for the Mac when there isn't something there for them to even try. Users want to see the real thing. They have got fed up with pictures.

[..]
What can be done to speed up the release of a Mac-Native (ie - no X11
needed) Unversial Binary version of OpenOffice.org proper?

See the points above mentioned: get developer and money...

We are always happy for new developers and machines for building ooo.

And we could think about continuous marketing for the Mac porting efforts.

Just keeping the Mac Porting web site up to date in my spare time is difficult. As far as I see it, this is one of the main marketing tools we are currently using. Other methods of marketing includes contacting related news sites, posting on our blogs, and going to exhibitions such as the Apple Expo in Paris.

If I'm informed correctly, there are just ten issues to be solved, before an *alpha* (far beyond beta) version can be released, tested and worked upon.

http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/news/ 2007/20070203toptenbeforealpha.html

Once the ten issues in the article above are fixed, we will release an alpha version of OpenOffice.org Aqua for Mac OS X, which will just about work. Users will be able to do something with it. It will be easy to install (compared to just now where you have to run a script before running ooo Aqua). There will still be more code to implement and change after that to get it properly working. We will release a full native version before making sure that it fully complies with the Apple Human Interface Guidelines (HIG).

I recently made a summary of what people could do if they are not a coder and want to help ooo. http://shaunmcdonald131.blogspot.com/2007/01/how-can-you-help- openofficeorg-project.html

Would it be a good idea to join the marketing efforts of the marketing project with the Mac porting team?

I am more than happy to join the marketing project to help towards the marketing of the Mac Porting project, as I seem to be doing that already.

The next release is going to be very important since it fixes a lot of bugs, especially on the Intel platform. These include the PPT export bug, and OpenOffice.org testtool (qa related not user related). There is also a 40MB reduction in the installed code size, with improved stability and no loss in features. It is also the first release to drop Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) support.

These will all need to be part of the news release for the next version.
