Exactly the same machine than mine ! I bought another laptop since, but it works fine.
I forgot to say that I started OO directly from the .dmg file. Now that I dragged the application into a folder on the disk the performance seems to have improved significiantly.

The reason why I didn't drag the application into the applications folder was that I already had the X11 dev build of 2.3 there and didn't want to overwrite it.
FYI, I have modified the bootstrap for user install dir. aqua version does use :
