Hello Bill,
I'm another Mac porter in the US - Houston to be precise. Glad to
have you with us.

Thank you, eric! I hope to join you all on irc next Wednesday. It
will be
9AM my time which should be good. I hope the conversations will be in
English as my French and German are terrible and Danish even
worse. I did
know a bit of Japanese but that has faded over the years.
This might be a good incentive to study, though. Would you care to
recommend a second language that would be useful for the project?
As you are probably (?) Mac users, is there an IRC client that you
like
above others? I don't have one installed right now and would
appreciate any
recommendations. I've downloaded and installed Linkinus which
appears, with
very little experience, to be nice.
The conversation on ooo_macport is in English. There are channels in
other languages, but the meetings are in English. Good for me or I
would be lost.
I use a client called Colloquy, I have seen others using Chatzilla,
and I started with another - I can't recall the name so I guess I
wasn't that impressed ;)
I leave the client going and the channel open all the time, not just
during the meeting. I pick up a lot of good tips about the Mac, and
if you lurk on the channel you can keep up with the latest developments.
With regard to your mail merge app, there is a Google Summer of Code
project finishing up integrating the Mac Address Book with OOo. That
might be a good fit for your custom program. Like the Mac port, its
pre-alpha, but with your experience that shouldn't scare you.
Happy building, and hope to hear from you soon.
Mike
