I'll leave the answer to someone who knows the ooo codebase.

An optional iWork style would be an awesome thing, and it would
almost bring iWork to other platforms for free, as well. I could
make icons similar to the ones used in iWork, but someone else would
need to create an alternate gui code for the toolbars. Is this
realistic?

One other option would be to have a user option to select between a
iWork palette style or the current toolbar options, made available
to all platforms.
A kick start for the discussion would be a good thing. Having a
prototype is the first step to starting the discussion.

I'm not familiar with coding and programming, so the most I could
do is draw up a mock-up. However, I personally think that the
iWork design is very professional (and I got used to it more
quickly than the Ribbon style of MSO 2007 after using MSO 2003),
and in Thunderbird when writing an email it has a similar theme,
and this style I think should generally be the goal. The best
thing would for there to be a type of round-table discussion on
design, as well as what elements of iWork and the existing OOo
would produce the most user-friendly and professional looking
program.

Hi Ariel,
If you can come up with a full design spec (and potentially the
code too, or even just a prototype), then a full revamp for the
toolbars to make them more mac like is going to be a great thing.
The problem at the moment for the developers, is that we know
that it needs to change, however we don't know what we want it to
look like. If there is the goal of make them look like x, then it
is a lot easier. Another reason for developers not working on
this just now, is that currently it is a low priority item.
