I'm currently translating the OpenOffice.org Help (a clear recipe for
insanity in anyone's book, due to the weird formatting), and a lot of
the keyboard shortcuts etc. quoted in it are wrong for OSX.
However, comparing these reminded me that our Aqua OpenOffice.org does
not yet use the system-wide OSX Special Characters palette. This
palette has more features and choices than the OpenOffice.org one.
Also, using it would integrate us more neatly into the native system,
and what the user expects from it.
Can we use the system-wide palette? Is this already planned, or should
I log a feature request? Will implementing it have a high headache
factor? (I hope not!)

BTW, in support of a previous email by another translator, although
the OpenOffice.org interface and Help strings are provided in SDF
format, SDF is not a localization format, and is of no earthly use to
any localizer.
Most translators convert it to gettext PO format (e.g. using the
Translate Toolkit filters) which is most widely used in free-software
and open-source localization. (P.O stands for Portable Object, and PO
files are basically text files with the extension .po.)
The standard for professional translation is XLIFF, and some
OpenOffice.org translators are already working in XLIFF. Both PO and
XLIFF are dedicated localization formats which also store meta-
information and track activity.
So, when someone mentions "PO files", s/he means the tree of 243
gettext files into which the OpenOffice.org SDF file is converted.
(The whole process has a high headache factor. ;) )
