Please do not break startup on Tiger. Many people have not upgraded, yet, to Leopard. I have higher priority problems right now that prevents me from doing so.
However, given that you are, I may look into this project and see if it works with Tiger.

It won't work with Tiger. Leopards X11 is based on X.org while Tiger X11 is based on Xfree86. You may be able to compile the X.org X11 with Tiger but it's not that easy. After two days still installing and compiling the depencies through MacPorts I finally gave up and reinstalled the X11 from the Tiger DVD again.
I worked through the Fink implementation. I just could not figure out how to switch from Apple's X11 to X.org. Might have proven interesting if I could have made the switch to see what happened with OpenOffice.org

Also, why did you upgrade X11? Was it not working for you?

There were some issues with remote login and various other stuff in the X11 or better Xquartz release shipping with Leopard. While I don't need remote login various users depend on it or want it to work so they updated their X11 package.
Understood that this is a major issue for some and a non-issue for others. I don't think there is a middle ground for this issue.
