It's not cheaper, but I think it's more versatile to buy a digital camcorder with an analog to digital passthrough capabilities. I convert older tapes by plugging the VCR into one side of my Sony Digital8 camcorder and recording it over Firewire right into iMovie. I've converted many tapes this way, including a few for people who read this list.
