My Epson scanner came with Arcsoft Photoimpression, which I installed
under 10.2.2. The first time I fired it up, it took over the entire
screen -- no top menu bar, no dock, and no apparent way out. In
frustration (and maybe a little panic), I shut down the Mac and
restarted. The Photoimpression icon stayed on the desktop, and I
carefully avoided it until some future day when I planned to be better
prepared to take it for a test drive. I've been using iPhoto ever
since, although its photo manipulation capabilities are limited at best.

I have since upgraded to 10.2.4. Last night a Windows-using friend
came over and wanted to see what Macs are all about. Before I could
say, "Don't click PhotoImpression," Photoimpression was clicked and
once again took over. I thought perhaps the OS upgrade would make a
difference, but there is still no avenue to help from the screen, and
no combination of keyboard keys would make it go away. Once again,
after an hour of looking for a way to quit, I ended up shutting down,
pulling the plug, and successfully (whew!) rebooting this morning.

Obviously PhotoImpression is Evil. I just dragged its icon to the
trash, then went into finder and dragged it to the trash from there
too. Is it really gone now?

Also, what affordable, more user-friendly photo retouching software do
people like?
