Hi Harry, I owned one and used it successfully for several years. (I still have it)
There are several variables to explore. OS compatibility I recall it being OS 8 compatible, specifically 8.0, 8.1, and 8.5.1. Don't know if it will work with anything more recent. Modem Port or Printer Port config. You have two choices depending on which port you use. You may have better luck using one port over the other. Port Mapping problem Although I would think not if you can get the Laserwriter to work in either port. Epson printer driver compatibility issue. Using the most recent version may create a problem. Try and use the oldest one you can find (like the one that shipped with the printer) I also have uncovered a 4.8.3 version in my archives which I will email to you directly. I hope something helps here. (her mentioning upgrades to version 7 confuse me. I don't know what she could be alluding to. I am very confident that 4.8.3 was the last version they released for this product from what I recall).
