I have OS X Server 10.4.3 running on one of the computers at work. Works great for all the Macs.
There are two PCs, both running Windows XP, on the LAN. I am trying to set up file and print sharing for them from the OS X Server, keeping it as simple as possible. I have: 1. Turned on Windows services in OS X Server. 2. Added a user with name of the person (Gayle) using one of the PCs, assigned her a password. 3. Created a home folder called "Gayle" on the Mac server. 4. Turned "sharing" on for that folder and all its subfolders, giving read/write access to user "Gayle." 5. Made sure that SMB (Windows file sharing) services are turned on. 6. For Windows purposes, named the computer "LoumagServer" and created a workgroup called "Loumag." I did all this following the instructions manual on Windows services for OS X Server. I have set it up as a "Standalone" Windows Server. When I go to Gayle's computer and try to find this server, using Windows' "My Network Places" feature, I cannot find the workgroup "Loumag" or the folder "Gayle" or any sign of the Mac server on the network (using the Network Wizard's "browse" function). Any hints or clues on what I might try next from those of you who brave souls who have waded into the thicket of Mac/Windows networking? Even if I could get it to work as a simple peer-to-peer file-sharing connection from one of the Windows computers to my Powerbook (running regular old X 10.4.4) it would help me understand how Windows goes about finding available file-sharing computers on the network.
