Good evening all,
I have recently purchased an iSight camera from MacTown. I have
connected it to my iBook with no problem. If I really enjoyed seeing myself
on my Mac, life would be good. However, I intend to chat with family and
friends!
My brother, a PC puke, went out and bought a webcam so our kids could
talk to each other via the iSight/webcams. I set up an AIM account, he had
an AIM account and we tried to connect this evening. It didn?t work.
We were able to send instant messages to each other and we were able to
make each other's computer "ring" with the message that XXX wants to video
chat. However, it would never connect and show any video. In fact, when my
brother would ring me, I would "accept" the call and the live picture of
myself would freeze with the phrase "Failed to start video chat because:
Greg (me) did not respond." in fact I had just responded!
I called Apple tech support and they said several things can cause
this. Most likely, because I am on a wireless network, my base station is
blocking the video. He said that I needed to call AOL and get a port number
that AOL uses to allow chats. I could enter that port number in the Airport
Admin Utility under "Port Mapping/Public Port."
O.K., I'm still full of trust. But have you ever tried to call
AOL?!?!?!!? Without an account you can't get past the phone tree.
I can't imagine that there isn't someone in the group that uses an
iSight (webcam) with AIM over a wireless network at their house or business.
What did you do to get this working?
Greg
