HI,
I've been a lurker for a couple of years and this is
my first post. I've used macs since the mac plus days
but the highest OS I've used is 9.1, I currently have
a StarMax 5000 (clone of mac 4400) with G3 card
300mhz.

My sister, a PC user, is a budding professional
photographer who is starting a move into digital
photography. She wants to buy a mac and told me she is
thinking about a G4.
I started researching and found that Apple is shipping
a G4 1.25 and 1.25 DP with combo drives and prices are
$1299 and $1599. super drives are $200 more. These
also will boot up in OS 9 and OS X.

My question is How do you think a 1.25 DP would
compare to a G5 performance wise. Keep in mind that my
sister would be dealing with raw photo files. Also
check out this article that indicates the 1.25 DP is a
better deal than the G5 1.6 and 1.8 single processor
macs. They say the G5 2.0 DP would blow a G4 away but
we are talking about a price of $2999.

I'd like to hear from people who have had experience
manipulating photos on these systems.

Also, this is a question for myself, since I'd like to
get a new system, How valuable do you view a current
G4 that is OS 9 bootable? Since all my software is
written for OS 9 and before, should this be a major
consideration or is the classic mode of OS X
sufficient? ( I don't currently use professional audio
apps)

One last question, How do you think a powerbook
1.33ghz would compare in performance to a desktop 1.25
Dp or a 1.42 DP?

Thanks in advance,
David
