Wow, this is an odd one... Is the desktop still in color?

Do you have any "haxies' running? (Haxies are little small programs 
such as menu extras, some haxies can seriously change the appearance of 
OS-X)

There was one haxie that changes the brushed metal look on some Apple 
programs and the most recent Apple updates changed the x - + buttons to 
be "sunken" in, so you might be  having a conflict there.
