I've been using SVCD instead of DVD for such things. Since I never have two hours of video for Grandma, it makes sense to put 20 minutes or so of good quality video on CD-R. They can be played in almost every DVD player because VCD and SVCD are standard formats in the far east, where all the DVD players are made.
