The original Airport does not have the hardware firewall functions
built into it. It does have a NAT server that can offer some protection
against script kiddie attacks.
If he is using OS-X, this does have software firewall protections, but
it is better to add as many layers of protection as possible.
Is he using the modem will most likely supplied by Insight or will he
be using his own modem?

The new Airport Express looks to be pretty decent ($129, 54 Mbs --
802.11g, iTunes, err AirTunes streaming etc.) but is not as fully
featured as a Airport Base Station.
