It seems that Panther has a big appetite for swap files. I typically have 
the same 256M of swap files. 

Today the swap files are out of hand: 2x64M, 1x128M, 1x256M, and 1x512M, 
for a total of 1G of swap. I have a sneaking suspicion that garbage 
collecting is not being done properly.
