Perhaps it's all my fault, but I think there are several things going on in Congress that have the potential to bite Mac users, and I have written to Bunning, McConnell and Northup about them. The one that promises to have the most direct affect on Mac users is the set of digital rights management proposals that are sailing through committees right now. To learn about these, read today's TidBITS (www.tidbits.com) or visit the Electronic Freedom Foundation (www.eff.org). Apple has (so far) refused to build much DRM into Macs, while Microsoft has promised support for DRM in Windows. Combining requirements for DRM with the already enforced DMCA might leave "alternative" operating systems like Mac OS and Linux on the outside looking in. The next meeting of the Louisville Computer Society will be November 26 For more information, see <http://www.aye.net/~lcs>. A calendar of activities is at <http://www.calsnet.net/macusers>.
