Unfortunately I'm on a Macbook, so no Appleworks.
I did have it on my old powerbook but that has been sold off.  :(

But from your suggestion I did find out that the copy of MS Office I  
have on this machine has a program called Equation Editor as well,  
and did just what I was looking for.
I have pretty much abandoned Office for Pages '08 for all of my note  
taking, paper writing, etc. but this little program with help out  
with my stats courses. I am able to lay out the equation just how I  
want it, 'select all' and copy it directly into pages. It shows up as  
a graphic, but it's a vector image so it can be scaled as large or  
small as I need it!
